Test and Demonstration sites (for internal use only)

Windows 10 Test and Demonstration purpose

This is designed as demonstration of a test environment for a single computer (requiring Windows 10 Pro 1607).

In this instance we have opted for the minimum supported SQL configuration, which is SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP3) Express, so that we can maximise the sharing of SQL databases.  

The sites (and databases added are):

• Qsoar - An empty site - in the default colour scheme
• Quoxient - A hypothetical site for Quoxient - as we might look like in 5 years time.
• Red - A hypothetical NGO - with a red colour scheme.
• Gold - A hypothetical large retailer chain - with a gold colour scheme.
• Green - A hypothetical large Utility- with a green colour scheme.
• Blue - A hypothetical Mining or Resource Company with Blue colour scheme.
• Retail - A hypothetical large retailer chain, using the same database as Gold, but displayed in more typical Quoxient colours.

These sites are all incomplete, and may change from time to time.  In addition, other sites may be present depending on the current expressions of interest or development work.

There are two ways of setting up a demonstration computer, Server Style and PC Style.  Both Styles will require the installation of SQL Server 2008 Express.

On WiIndows 10 on any version prior to v1607 you will need to install .NET Framework 4.6.2.

You can use any version of Windows from WIndows 7 onwards with the native IIS.  And Any version of SQL Express, from SQL Express 20008 R2 on-wards.  These are available as free down loads from Microsoft.  

SQL 2008 Express

Why would you choose SQL Server 2008 R2 over SQL Server 2014?  Both will work.  The only reason is that databases from later versions cannot be restored on SQL 2008 (or on any version).  There for to maximise the ability to share demonstration databases we tend to stick with SQL Server 2008 R2 on our demonstration sites.

Server Style

Server Style requires more resources, and has resources running in the back ground all the time.  This uses IIS and an SQL Express.  This will work on Windows 10 Pro

PC Style

PC Style is lighter in resources, and permissions and the resources on run on demand.   This uses IIS Express and an SQL Express. This will work on Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Home.
